A disturbing trend of pet abandonment has been on the rise in Pakistan, with many animals being left to suffer on the streets. According to research, approximately 80% of pet buyers purchase animals at their children’s demand, only to abandon them later.
The consequences of this irresponsible behavior are devastating. Many pets are left hungry, thirsty, and physically abused, with incidents often going unreported. Animal rescue centers receive approximately 60-70 percent of calls from pet owners wanting to abandon their pets, this highlights the urgent need for education and awareness on responsible pet ownership.
Many injured animals rescued from the roads are found to be abandoned pets. Initially, baby pets are often brought home as gifts for children, and the family quickly bonds with them. However, when these pets are neglected, they get sick and stop eating. As sentient beings, pets are deeply affected by human behavior, and their emotional well-being is tied to the care and attention they receive.
As an animal welfare organization, we urge parents to take responsibility for teaching their children the importance of animal care and welfare. Pets are not toys or gifts, but living beings that require love, care, and attention.
