In Oct 2024, a wild leopard killed many cattle in Jandi Mohalla (Jabhi) area of Upper Khanpur, killing several goats and a bull. So far, a father and son have been injured and many cattle have been killed in previous attacks.
The affected people have demanded action from higher authorities.
Residents have said that due to the scarcity of food in the winter season, wild animals descend from nearby mountains to hunt in the residential areas and villages. Most of the attacks take place at night. However, even during the day, cattle fall prey to attacks as they are grazing in the mountains.
In light of the escalating situation, community leaders have urged the Wildlife Department to implement immediate measures to protect both residents and their livestock. They called for increased patrols in the area and the establishment of a compensation fund for affected families.
Local activists are also advocating for better wildlife management strategies to address the root causes of these animal attacks, emphasizing the need for a collaborative approach between wildlife authorities and the community to ensure safety for all.
